What is burnout and how do I deal with it?Burnout, as defined by the National Library of Medicine, is the result of prolonged stress affecting an individual’s mental, physical, and emotional well-being. I often experience burnout, and when I do, I fall into a cycle of exhaustion, hopelessness, and feeling down. It’s easy to fall into this state, but tough to pull myself out. It usually takes me a few days to recover, and that’s okay. During these times, I focus on communicating and accepting that burnout happens to everyone. My burnout usually comes from juggling school, work, and family responsibilities. However, I believe burnout can be managed and overcome, and most people experience it at some point.

Tip #1:Ask for an Extension

Burnout happens to all of us. Whether it’s for a homework assignment or a work report, asking for an extension is okay when you’re overwhelmed. Taking a day to regroup can help you reset.

Tip #2: Sleep!

There are only 24 hours in a day, but sleep is crucial for efficiency. I’ve made the mistake of sacrificing sleep to meet deadlines, only to end up sick with a fever. That setback was worse than missing a deadline. Now, I take it as a sign to slow down and prioritize my well-being. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, ask for that extension and get some rest.

Tip #3: Check Things Off Your List

My favorite way to manage burnout is by checking tasks off my to-do list. It’s rewarding to see things crossed off, and it gives me a sense of accomplishment. Try it—it might help you feel more in control.

Tip #4: Reflect

Take time to reflect on why you’re experiencing burnout. It’s like confronting your challenges head-on. This process helps you regroup and understand your situation so you can stay engaged and prevent burnout in the future.

I’ve experienced burnout many times, but by following these steps, I find satisfaction in knowing I’m managing it effectively.
