I’ve struggled with studying my entire life. Studying remained a challenge until I attended a workshop on time management for efficient studying. As college students, we often use “no time” as an excuse, but by being honest with ourselves, we can find study time by sacrificing some activities. For example, use travel time to review notes, a textbook, or study on your phone. Here are some tips to help you study more effectively.
Find some space
In my experience, studying in the school library helps me concentrate and get work done. At home, constant noise and family distractions make it difficult to focus. A quiet, distraction-free space like the school library improves my concentration and commitment to school tasks, as being on campus motivates me to be productive. Find a similar space that helps you focus and stay productive until you’re ready to leave.
Reward yourself
Just because you’re studying doesn’t mean you shouldn’t take breaks. Use breaks as incentives: after 30 minutes of productive studying, take a 5-10 minute brain break. Make sure your break is less than half the time you spent studying to stay on track with your goals.
Make time
We always have time to study. Instead of watching a movie, bingeing a TV show, going out with friends, or scrolling through TikTok, dedicate at least an hour to studying. However, avoid studying if you’re exhausted or your mind is too tired to focus, as you won’t retain much. Remember, you’ve got this test, exam, or quiz in the bag!
