What’s the deal with Internships? Why do we apply and get rejected or receive no response? I’ve been there and wondered about that. Landing an internship can be difficult, but nowadays, we know that it’s highly recommended and practically needed to apply for a job after college. As a result, internships are in high demand and it has become an extreme sport to apply and compete against individuals who want the position just as much as you do.
Secret #1: Start somewhere!
Getting an entry-level job at your dream company is a great way to get your foot in the door! For example, your dream is to work for a tech company and your goal is to become their director of marketing. Starting as their front desk receptionist is a great way to get recognized and connect with professionals who work in the Marketing department. This is beneficial to your growth and it serves as a great way to showcase your work ethic. As a bonus, you can learn what it takes to move up within your company.
Secret #2: Modify your resume, cover letter, and portfolio.
Adapt, adjust, and make changes! Sometimes, it just has to do with the way you send in your resume, cover letter, or portfolio. When I was new to the game, my whole life was on my resume but after further research and discussion, I removed certain experiences, projects, and jobs that did not fit with the companies and positions needs. Make changes to your documents so they highlight work and experiences that correspond to the internship position! Companies want concise, straight to the point descriptions.
Secret #3: Do not give up!
You get an email of rejection? You get no response after a couple of months? Give yourself 2 minutes to be sad then pick yourself up and apply to the next internship. Something is bound to come your way. I applied to over 300 internships before I landed 1. You are a badass and it is their loss.
